Yoga for good health

Yoga for Good health

Practicing yoga with discipline and perseverance can bring about significant and transformative benefits, leading to a life that is improved. Discover here how engaging in yoga contributes to the creation of a lifestyle that is nearly free from diseases.

In the present day, many adults in India are battling numerous health issues attributed to their unhealthy lifestyles. The practice of yoga induces cellular changes that promote overall well-being in individuals.

In our nation, everyone above the age of 18 is considered an adult. For these adults to lead healthy lives and commit to maintaining a wellness-focused lifestyle, yoga plays an important role. Some prevalent diseases affecting adults in India include diabetes, with the country being the global epicenter of this condition. It is disheartening to witness individuals as young as 35 relying on daily medication for issues such as high blood pressure and backaches. Conditions like PCOD are a significant challenge for women, and cases of heart attacks and related ailments are surfacing at as early as 45 years of age.

Dependence on gadgets such as mobile phones, smart TVs, the internet, smartphones, as well as various other devices has become a norm. These gadgets have taken control of their lives, contributing to a decline in the overall happiness levels of our society.

However, life can be revolutionized through disciplined yoga practice.

As adults, many of us recall a time when the prevalence of such gadgets was minimal, coinciding with a period of high activity levels. Breaking free from gadgets requires proactive efforts from adults, especially those experiencing health issues. Taking personal initiative is crucial for getting the benefits. In this context, the wisdom of Gautam Buddha’s phrase, “Atma Deepo Bhav”, holds great relevance. It encourages individuals to be their own light bearers, finding their path without dependency on others. Attaining this enlightened stage, often facilitated by Hatha Yoga, enables adults to understand and confront the real problems and challenges in their lives. Yoga and Pranayama instill the principles of perseverance, empowering students to achieve absolute victory in their endeavors. Through yoga asanas and Pranayama, practitioners learn to use the gravitational force of the earth. This helps them control over both body and mind.

Recognizing that problems in abdominal organs often lead to other bodily ailments, ancient yogic sages and gurus extensively studied and researched abdominal muscles. Their focus was on naturally toning these muscles, as issues in the abdomen are often the root cause of various health problems. Yoga aids in increasing the contraction of abdominal organs, promoting smooth digestion, a good metabolism, and, to a considerable extent, a leaner and fitter physique.

We sincerely hope that elucidating these health benefits will draw you closer to embracing yoga as a way of life.

Benefits of Yoga in daily life

Benefits of Practicing Yoga Everyday

To comprehend the holistic health benefits of yoga, it is essential to delve into the ancient science, as explained by yoga gurus. Yoga, defined as the union of body, breath, as well as mind, aims to establish harmony at every level of our existence. According to Maharshi Patanjali, yoga comprises eight stages. These stages serve as guidelines to apply yoga in daily life, in order to facilitate physical and mental balance and achieve optimum health.

Before exploring the technical aspects of yoga, it’s crucial to understand why adopting yoga is necessary. Despite common perceptions, yoga goes beyond being merely an ancient form of exercise. The deep meaning of yoga, encapsulated in the union of body, breath, and mind, was not commonly explained during our formative years.

As a fitness seeker, my understanding of yoga was limited to its physical benefits until a deeper encounter with this ancient practice. The need for a healthy, harmonious existence needed a closer look at yoga, thus leading to a desire to share this beautiful journey with others. Yoga’s effects are immense as well as profound, rapidly taking individuals toward holistic health.

So, let’s delve deeper into the technicalities of yoga and understand why it should be a way of life.

Yoga, derived from the Sanskrit word “yuj,” meaning join, attach, use, and apply, focuses on gaining physical balance while delving into the inner workings of the body. It thus trains individuals to view all aspects of life evenly. The concepts given by the father of yoga, Patanjali, in his book “Yoga Sutra,” provide profound insights. These concepts are structured into eight stages, giving rise to the Ashtanga School of yoga. These stages represent the sequential process of learning and also applying yoga in daily life, serving as classical guidelines.

The Eight Stages of Yoga:
    1. Yama: Self-restraint, encompassing ahimsa (non-violence), satya (truthfulness), asteya (non-stealing), brahmacharya (self-restraint), aparigraha (non-accumulating).
      2. Niyama: Observances or practices, including saucha (cleanliness), santosha (satisfaction), tapas (disciplined approach), swadhaya (self-study).
      3. Asana: Training the body with specific postures.
      4. Pranayama: Training to expand and control the breath.
      5. Pratayhara: Controlling one’s senses.
      6. Dharna: Concentration.
      7. Dhyana: Meditation.
      8. Samadhi: Union with the true self.

The first three stages – yama, niyama, asana – are outward quests, restraining oneself from misconduct, following observances, and training the body with specific postures. These stages help the body work optimally, establishing a fit physique ready to face life’s challenges.

The next two stages – pranayama and pratayhara – delve into understanding inner quests. Observing the breath and utilizing senses in a favorable manner guide individuals toward controlling the mind. This developed ability then allows a person to distance themselves from desires brought about by the senses.

Once the body is fit and the mind is firm, the last three stages – Dharna, Dhyan, Samadhi – propel individuals toward their innermost selves and close to their souls. These stages lead to an enlightened state, where consequently, individuals stop seeking power from external sources, realizing that true power lies within. At this stage, they come close to absolute wisdom, while recognizing the real power centers within themselves and gaining profound knowledge about life.

Simplest way to understand Yoga

Simplest way to understand Yoga

Here, we provide an exploration of yoga, while keeping its fundamental aspects in mind. Yoga should be presented in a simplified manner for the common person. The two primary components for everyday yoga are Yogasana and Pranayama.

For many of us, yoga appears to be something highly beneficial for the human body and overall well-being. However, amidst the vast amount of information available on yoga, pinpointing the exact source for understanding it can be challenging. The struggle to comprehend yoga often intertwines with questions about which type of yoga to learn, where to learn it, as well as how to incorporate it into our lives.

Let’s interpret yoga as an applied science!

Our aim is to help you gain a clear understanding and confidence in learning the art of yoga. In our blog posts on Yoga Asana and Pranayama, we try to demystify what yoga is all about. Once you grasp the concepts of Yoga Asana and Pranayama, you’ll be able to explore the theoretical aspects of yoga on your own. However, for the practical application of yoga, having a yoga guru and a community of fellow practitioners is important. It’s worth noting that human achievements often result from mutual support, and the same principle applies to learning and practicing yoga.
